It is considered one of the ancient churches, not only in Damascus, but also in the Levant. Its ancient history is linked to that of Damascus, and it’s located in the old Damascus as the headquarter of Antioch and all the East Patriarchate of the Greek Orthodox.
The cathedral was named “Church of Mary” in relation to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and it was originally an Aramaic word meaning pure or immaculate.
The history of the Mariameh Church goes back to the first century of Christianity during the reign of Emperor Constantine the First.
The cathedral includes five churches: the first is the Church of May, which is the main church, and the Church of Saint Catherine, which is a church that was also annexed to the Mariameh Church during the restoration, including a museum of clothing, decorations, and icons inherited from the patriarchs, monks, and Mar Takla Church, which was also annexed to the Mariameh Church, which is the headquarter of the Holy Patriarchate of Antioch of the Greek Orthodox.
There’re also, the square of the Church of Saints Cyprian and Justina, and the Church of St. Nicholas are two churches that were annexed to the Mariameh Church, in addition to the bell tower that was built in the time of Patriarch Esperidon.
