Overview

The Umayyad Mosque is located in the heart of the old city of Damascus built by the Umayyad Caliph Al-Walid bin Abdul Malik in the year 705 AD, which was previously the Temple of Jupiter built in the Roman era and then transformed with the passage of time to the Church of John the Baptist.

Despite the changes that occurred during the construction of the mosque, the tomb of Saint John the Baptist still exists in it, in which his head was buried.

The Umayyad Mosque was built in a professional artistic way, decorated with motifs and mosaics, and it is considered one of the most important mosques in the world due to its ancient historical importance, the beauty of its construction, and its sanctity, as it is believed that this mosque is the place where Jesus Christ will return at the Resurrection.
