The Valley of the Tombs in Palmyra area, which Palmyrians called the “rest house” or “the house of eternity”. Each Palmyrian family had its own cemetery decorated with inscriptions and drawings. These tombs date back to the first century BC. There are several types of burials, including tower burials, which consist of several floors, ground burials, and home cemeteries.
All of these tombs are engraved with inscriptions, rare stone decorations, and natural-colored wall pictures, including scenes from life, myths, and pictures of the deceased.
There are also tombs in Palmyra called “Palmyra cemeteries”, which are a single tomb covered from the inside with carved stone panels, and the deceased may be placed in a wooden coffin.
In 2001, a single tomb was found and inside it was the remains of a man placed in a severely eroded wooden coffin. After studies conducted on the organic remains of the corpse and the wooden coffin, it was found that the body dates back to the fourth century BC (the Hellenistic period), which means that this grave is considered one of the oldest Burials located in the world.
